Wanted: Dead is a deceptively hard game to describe. Its creators call it a “triple-A love letter to the sixth generation of consoles,” which isn’t surprising, considering the team is made up of former Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive developers. There’s a lot of Ninja Gaiden’s DNA in Wanted: Dead, but I get the sense that it’s calling back to an even earlier time. While it looks and plays like a hack-n-slasher, structurally, it’s actually closer to traditional 2D beat ‘em ups of the arcade era. If you like any of those things, you’ll want to keep an eye out for this game when it arrives next February. Raccon games Stone is a former military operative first introduced to players in a solitary confinement cell. Despite her situation, she’s flippant when the Warden visits with her, offering a proposition for a way out. Stone assumes she’s being hired for a straight-up assassination but instead is strangely placed on a Hong Kong police strike team alongside a number of former squadmates who were also previously serving life sentences for war crimes. Details about exactly what happened in her past are scarce, but in the years since their release, her team has become known as the Zombie Unit due to the sheer amount of death and destruction they leave in their wake — in the name of justice of course.

I'm so conflicted about Wanted: Dead. The core gameplay loop is extremely satisfying, even if it's so bloody that it makes me a bit squeamish. On the other hand, it's so punishing (even on the easy mode) that I'm progressing through the game painfully slowly. I suppose it's a testament to the gameplay loop that I'm even willing to keep pushing forward. GOT GAMES? YES WE DO! Underground 2 debuted in 2004 for Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Game Boy Advance. A year later, it debuted for the Nintendo DS as well. The entry continues Underground and has similar mechanics, game modes, and gameplay. Yet, it swaps the Knockout game mode for the Underground Racing League and Street X modes.
